Research Operations Intern

About Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit is an independent research library. We digitize public domain collections held on paper and microform in libraries and archives, and make them freely available for research and education. Most of what humanity has recorded is still not online. We are working to change that.

Digitizing the public domain creates a public good, but too little funding supports this work. Vast collections remain undigitized and locked in stacks, limiting who can use them and what can be discovered. Technology companies and AI labs stand to benefit enormously from these materials. We believe public-private partnerships can turn that shared interest into funding for digitization, with free access for research and education as a condition of the work.

The internship

This is a paid internship for students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, open to students anywhere. You will digitize public domain records held at public libraries and archives in your own region: handling materials, scanning, and checking the results. The work happens in person at those institutions, with our team supporting you from a distance.

What you will do

  • Help identify public domain records at public libraries and archives near you that are worth digitizing.
  • Handle and scan paper and microform materials following our handling guidelines.
  • Check captured images for completeness, focus, and page order, and deliver them to our team.
  • Work respectfully in libraries and archives and follow their rules.

What we are looking for

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Any field is welcome.
  • Within reach of public libraries or archives whose collections you could work in regularly.
  • Interest in history, libraries, archives, or research.
  • Attention to detail and patience with precise, repeated work.

How to apply

Fill out the short application. Tell us where you are based and which libraries or archives near you you have in mind. If we think there’s a fit, we’ll be in touch within a week to schedule an interview.
